Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're seeking a buggy to run around in or a compact stroller for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre even in tight spaces.
If you are looking for an easy ride in your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are prone to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit.
Sturdy frame
The latest figures have been released showing that the three-wheeled buggie - a symbol of the noughties of more money than sense is in a decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers which can be more versatile in terrain, while also looking stylish and easy to push.
The bigger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front, make it easier to move and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on the newborn baby and a 3-year-old child and found it extremely sturdy. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it is solid to push and is very stable when traversing difficult terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly and have a suspension built-in. It was extremely comfortable for my children.
Another thing to think about is the size and shape. It is important for the seat to be big enough to allow your child to feel at ease and to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies have the option of lying flat that allows the child to face you, whereas others only allow a face-to-parent one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and walking in muddy areas. This buggy is ideal for a single child starting from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat. Storage options are also great, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and an extra pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels means that your buggy will have more stability on rough terrain - ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with the front wheels that swivel to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This can also help in the event that you hit an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel will rise up to keep you from hitting it.
A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres. This means they are able to handle different terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're prone to punctures so you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.
Our top 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both of these buggies come with larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly move up and down kerbs. They also have suspensions that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps extremely effectively".
The downside of having larger wheels is that they make some buggies quite wide and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This can be an issue especially if you're using it to an exercise bike or to be able to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and about. Most models come with compact folding options, which permit you to take off the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheel buggy can be more maneuverable for a child. The way in which they are built means that the front wheels turn at a whim and are incredibly easy to maneuver which makes them perfect for difficult terrains such as parks, cobbles, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the 3-wheeler with her toddler. she wrote: "The Terrain is a pleasure to drive on uneven terrain. The front swivel wheel was especially useful." I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when going downhill or on a rough terrain."
The only downside of this incredible maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces - something to consider especially if you live in a city region. If this is the case then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.
